A 30 million euro radar development program has been completed in Hungary

2008. november 13, csütörtök

The last element of the radar modernization program of HungaroControl has been inaugurated. On 11. November 2008. dr. Lajos Csepi, State Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Telecommunication and Energy has inaugurated the last element of the radar modernization program, financed 50% by the Cohesion Fund of the European Union.

In his speech dr. Lajos Csepi, State Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Telecommunication and Energy underlined: „With the development of its air traffic control system Hungary is contributing to the implementation of the Single European Sky concept. The development of the infrastructure that is integral part of the European air navigation system is of strategic importance. The objective of the technical development is to maintain the high level of safety, to prevent conflict situations, and to minimize delays and create sufficient capacity. With the completion of this project the safety of civil aviation will grow and the high standard of air navigation can be ensured for the coming 15 years.”

„The building of the new Terminal Area Radar and the Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System at the Ferihegy Airport has been done as part of the radar modernization program finance with 15 million euro, 50% of the total cost? by the Cohesion Fund of the European Union. I would like to congratulate to those involved, that the work was finished on time, fulfilling all the strict requirements set by the Cohesion Fund.” – emphasized in his welcome speech dr Károly Lotz, President of the Board of HungaroControl Pte. Ltd. Co.

„Although the development of GPS-based air navigation is inevitable, the world of aviation today is unimaginable without ground radar equipment. These devices are locating and projecting the position of aircrafts on the radar screen. The most important elementary data of air traffic control, is supplied by the radar stations. The position of civil aircrafts is projected with high accuracy on the radar screens with the subjunctive parameters of distance, angle, - if equipped with on board transponder – the altitude, speed and ID code.” – said dr. László Kiss, CEO.

In Hungary there are three locations, where civil airspace control radars are in operation. At Kőrishegyen and near Püspökladány there are long-range radar stations. The renewal of the Kőrishegy station started in the second half of 2006. and commissioning took plece on 27. February 2007. As of March 2007. the second phase of the development started at the Püspökladány location and after the successful completion of all the tests, the inauguration ceremony of the renewed radar station was on 30. October 2007.

Today with the inauguration of the brand new equipment, installed in the Terminal Area Radar and the Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System located at Budapest-Ferihegy airport, the program is complete. To fulfill the capacity requirements of the Ferihegyi airport an Advanced Surface Movement and Guidance System has been established. Signals, transmitted by the transponders of air and ground vehicles moving in the airport, are collected by receivers. Based on this signals the system can located the position and the movement of signal sources (vehicles). The high accuracy and integrity of the image created by this system can ensure safe ground operations for air traffic control, at bad weather conditions in particular. Besides radars there was a need to develop software processing its data. The MATIAS integrated control system is able to process and project additional data supplied by the renewed radar stations. Due to the new hardware and software air traffic controllers are going to be less overloaded, therefore safety is going to further increase. With the increased capacity, the airspace is going to be less crowded, flights are going to be more punctual, and last but not least we can travel more safely.
